Ponta da Ferraria lighthouse stands in the western part of S. Miguel Island, in the Azores. It’s a very beautiful region, but completely exposed to the strong Atlantic winds. The hedgerows that can be seen in the image are there to try to protect the crops from the effects of the salty wind.

This lighthouse, like many others in Portugal, includes a house where the men or women that operate and monitor the equipments (called faroleiros) live with their families.
